If you’ve ever walked through the doors of The Harbor at Renaissance and been greeted with a cheerful, “Howdy!” then you’ve had the pleasure of meeting our beloved Ellie Beck. Ellie has been part of The Harbor family for several years now, and each day with her is a joy.

Ellie was born in Albemarle County and grew up in Earlysville, living on a farm as the youngest of five children. She remembers her childhood fondly, describing it as wonderful—full of hard work, simple pleasures, and truly living off the land. Those early years helped shape her love for nature, animals, and all things outdoors.

A proud graduate of Albemarle High School, Ellie later worked for State Farm Insurance. One of the most beautiful chapters of her life began at a dance in Charlottesville, where she met the love of her life, Oscar Beck. He served in the Army during their early years together, and in 1963, they were married. They built a life filled with laughter, adventure, and devotion.

Together, they raised two wonderful children—a boy and a girl—and Ellie beams with pride when she talks about her family, which now includes three beautiful grandchildren. Ellie and Oscar also volunteered side by side with the Earlysville Volunteer Fire Department, pouring their time and hearts into serving their community.

Ellie has always loved traveling. Some of her favorite memories include trips to Tennessee, Hampton Roads, and tours of historic battlefields. Her eyes still light up when she talks about her adventures or reminisces about the Blue Ridge Mountains, Shenandoah National Park, and the Shenandoah Valley—places that will forever hold a piece of her heart.

If you’re looking for Ellie, you might find her outside, resting in the sunshine, and enjoying a comforting cup of coffee—the perfect relaxing day in her book.

She is an avid bird watcher, a hobby she has loved throughout her life and one she continues to enjoy here at The Harbor. She is also a lifelong animal lover, having had many cats and dogs of her own. Indoors, she enjoys watching the weather, listening to country music and gospel hymns (especially “Amazing Grace”), and tuning in to good old-fashioned game shows. She’ll never turn down a fun game of bingo, “finish the phrase,” or trivia with her Harbor friends.

Ellie’s sense of humor is unmatched. If she sees you yawning, don’t be surprised to hear her say, “Wake up, little Suzie.” And if she catches you dancing, be prepared for her to cheer, “Shake it, baby, shake it!” Her lighthearted spirit brings so much joy to those around her.

We are truly grateful to have Ellie as part of our Harbor family. Her warmth, humor, stories, and zest for life brighten each day. It is a blessing to know her, care for her, and share the wonderful memories she continues to create.
