There’s something about The Harbor at Renaissance resident Shirley Leake that just makes people smile. Maybe it’s her quick wit, her love of a good joke, or the way she can’t help but tap her foot and sing along whenever music is playing. Whatever it is, Shirley’s spark has made her a beloved member of The Harbor at Renaissance family, and we are grateful she’s here.



Shirley’s story begins in Charlottesville, Virginia, where she was born into a large and loving family—one that taught her early the value of laughter, faith, and sticking together. She attended Lane High School before stepping out into the working world, first as a babysitter and later in the school cafeteria, making sure the students were well fed and cared for. She even spent some time at VA Oil, always ready to lend a hand wherever she was needed.

Life took a sweet turn when Shirley met her future husband, the man who would become her partner in every sense. They married in 1956 and built a beautiful life together, raising four children in a home full of music and laughter. Sundays were spent singing in the church choir, while weekends often meant packing up the family to cheer on her husband, a talented bluegrass musician, as he played with his band. From local competitions to lively festivals, Shirley and her family were always there, clapping along and supporting each other.

Shirley’s family grew over the years, and she’s now the proud grandmother of seven and great-grandmother of eight—a legacy built on love and togetherness. Her adventures have taken her to countless places, from the rolling hills of Tennessee and West Virginia to the scenic stretches of North Carolina. Some trips were about family, some about fun, and a few were for the thrill of NASCAR races, which Shirley absolutely loved.

These days at The Harbor, Shirley continues to fill her days with music and joy. Whether she’s listening to live performances, singing along to her favorite gospel or country songs on the radio, or just enjoying the sounds of laughter with friends, she’s always the life of the room. Mornings aren’t complete without her extra sweet cup of coffee, and in the afternoons, nothing beats a cold Pepsi. She loves to relax with westerns and musicals on TV and isn’t one to shy away from a lively game of trivia.

When you see Shirley in the halls, she’s likely sharing a joke, grinning at a friend, or humming a tune. She shines her light every single day, making The Harbor a warmer, happier place for everyone. We’re proud to know her, blessed to have her, and delighted to celebrate the sweet, funny, and singsong spirit that is Shirley Leake.
