Gertie’s story starts in the heart of Washington, D.C., where she learned early what it means to be part of a bustling, close-knit family. Catholic school gave structure to her days and faith to her spirit, while life in Arlington, Virginia, offered new adventures and a community she’d grow to love. At Washington and Lee High School, Gertie was the kind of student you remember—quick to help, always ready with a joke and never one to shy away from a challenge.

From a young age, Gertie’s warmth and sense of responsibility set her apart. As a bus driver for Prince William County, she greeted each child with a reassuring smile and a wave, quietly making every passenger feel safe. Later, she found a new way to care for people as a Licensed Practical Nurse at UVA Hospital. Her gentle presence and easy humor made her a comfort to patients and colleagues alike—she was the nurse who remembered your story, the one who always knew how to lift your spirits.

Family has always been Gertie’s heartbeat. She married the love of her life—a partnership built on laughter, resilience and that rare ability to weather whatever life brings, together. Six children filled their home with noise and love, and as the years passed, the table grew crowded with grandchildren and great-grandchildren, each one drawn to Gertie’s warmth and her bottomless supply of hugs.

Travel opened up new worlds for Gertie, but one trip stands out as her favorite: visiting her daughter in Germany. She still talks about it—the sights, the surprises, the joy of adventure with family by her side.

Gertie believes in savoring life’s small pleasures. Mornings start with a hot cup of coffee, afternoons are better with an ice-cold Diet Coke and there’s always room for something sweet. She’s never happier than when there’s a dog nearby—she has a gentle touch with animals and an obvious soft spot for furry friends.

Energy like Gertie’s can’t be contained. She loved the friendly competition of bowling, the pure fun of dancing and the peace she found at Saturday Mass. She’s a people person to her core—generous with her time, ready with a zinger and known for a smile that makes strangers feel like old friends.

At The Harbor, Gertie’s presence is a kind of sunshine. People know her voice before they see her—her laughter travels down the hallway and her conversations brighten every gathering. She brings people together, whether it’s at a meal, a game or just in the quiet moments that make up a day.

Music is another thread in the tapestry of her life. When musicians visit, Gertie is front and center, singing along, tapping her foot and letting the music lift her even higher. She loves to relax in the courtyards, soaking up the sun, breathing in the fresh air and sharing a story or two with anyone who joins her outside.
